What is robotics made of? The interdisciplinary politics of robotics research

چکیده
Abstract Under framings of grand challenges, robotics has been proposed as a solution to wide range societal issues such road safety, ageing society, economic productivity and climate change. However, what exactly is research? From its inception, an inherently interdisciplinary field, bringing together diverse domains engineering, cognitive science, computer science and, more recently, knowledge from social sciences humanities. Previous research on interdisciplinarity shows that this mode production often driven by concerns political choices. The politics who gets make these choices terms the focus empirical in paper. Using novel mixed-method approach combining bibliometrics, desk-based analysis fieldwork, article builds narrative at UK’s largest public lab, Bristol Robotics Laboratory. This paper argues for recognition plural ways knowing interdisciplinarity. citation analysis, through tracing emerging fields disciplines, to, finally, investigation researchers’ experiences; each method contributes distinct complementary outlook “what made of”. While bibliometrics allows visualising prominent disciplines keywords, document reveals influential missing stakeholders. Meanwhile, fieldwork explores logics underpinning identifies capabilities necessary perform research. In doing so, synthesises locating provides recommendations enabling “structural preparedness interdisciplinarity”.

Cognitive Robotics: What it is and Why it is Important for the Assistive Robotics Community
Today robotics technology is broadening its applications from factory to more general-purpose applications in domestic and public use e.g., rehabilitation, search and rescue, etc. However, if robotics technology is to be successful in such environments, it will need to meet new levels of robustness, physical dexterity and cognitive capability. This paper discusses an emerging field called cogni...
متن کاملThe Beginnings of Robotics Research
This paper reviews the early goals, perspectives and accomplishments of robotics research. I will focus on uncertainty and structured versus unstructured environments. For perspective I will sketch a history of the beginnings and evolution of robotics research. The main ideas are: • Robotics research began with teleoperation in the 40’s and 50’s. • Uncertainty was a central theme of robotics re...
متن کاملIs Robotics Going Statistics? The Field of Probabilistic Robotics
In the 1970s, most research in robotics presupposed the availability of exact models, of robots and their environments. Little emphasis was placed on sensing and the intrinsic limitations of modeling complex physical phenomena. This changed in the mid-1980s, when the paradigm shifted towards reactive techniques. Reactive controllers rely on capable sensors to generate robot control. Rejections ...
متن کاملBridging the Gap between Space Robotics Research and Robotics Education
The focus of Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s Office of Communication and Education is to engage the public through the implementation of innovative approaches such as informal and formal education methods, science outreach, and research development efforts [1]. One of the direct outcomes of this emphasis is to create a bridge to provide students access to the research and development activities inv...
متن کاملAspects of Japanese Robotics Research
Robotics appears to be a very lively and fruitful field of research in Japan. Some of the research topics cannot be found elsewhere at all, and some are significantly advanced. Discussing this impression, a collection of laboratories is introduced with their most outstanding topics. This report is based on the notes of trips through Japanese laboratories in February, September 1997, and January...
